OpenAI Unveils Apps SDK to Expand ChatGPT Functionality

OpenAI has introduced the Apps SDK, a new platform enabling third-party developers to create web-based applications that integrate seamlessly into ChatGPT conversations. This marks a significant step in expanding the functionality of the popular AI assistant, with over 4 million developers already on board.

The Apps SDK leverages the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to allow developers to design both the interface and logic of their applications. These apps will appear as interactive cards within ChatGPT conversations, maintaining a consistent and native feel. Developers are encouraged to use familiar web technologies to build their apps, fostering an ecosystem of small, visually cohesive components.

OpenAI announced this initiative at its annual DevDay event, drawing parallels with the smartphone app platform announcements of 2008. While the SDK is still in development and not widely rolled out, no public information is available about companies that have tested or implemented web experiences within ChatGPT using the Apps SDK in its preview phase.

OpenAI will begin accepting app submissions for review and publication later this year. The early documentation emphasizes that embedded components should look and behave as if they're native to ChatGPT, with guidelines covering layout, color themes, typography, and accessibility. As the SDK evolves, it promises to transform the way users interact with ChatGPT, bringing a wealth of new functionalities to the AI assistant.
