OpenAI & Stripe Revolutionize E-commerce with 'Agentic Commerce'
OpenAI and Stripe have joined forces to transform e-commerce with 'Agentic Commerce'. This innovative system enables AI agents, like ChatGPT and Gemini, to handle tasks such as product discovery and checkout within chat interfaces. The pilot program, 'Buy it in ChatGPT', is currently limited to single-item purchases, U.S. users, and U.S. Etsy merchants.
The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open standard developed by Stripe and OpenAI, facilitates interactions between AI agents, consumers, and merchants for automated purchases. This protocol emphasizes interoperability, merchant control, and rapid integration into existing e-commerce systems. OpenAI has implemented Instant Checkout in ChatGPT as the first platform to adopt this protocol.
The checkout process occurs entirely within the chat interface, using the ACP and secure payment handling with Stripe. However, it's crucial to note that the AI cannot make purchases independently. User approval is required at every step, ensuring a secure and controlled shopping experience.
If successful, agentic commerce could revolutionize consumer-merchant interactions and create new sales channels for merchants. OpenAI's experiment is currently limited and experimental, but the underlying concept is vast, with the potential to reshape e-commerce as we know it.
