Nigeria Unveils First Multilingual LLM, Boosting AI Development in Africa
Nigeria has launched its first Multilingual Large Language Model (LLM), a significant step towards leading AI development in Africa. The project, developed collaboratively, aims to strengthen language representation and accelerate AI project development.
The LLM, trained on five low-resource languages and accented English, is a result of a four-day workshop that formulated the initial draft of Nigeria's National AI Strategy. Over 7,000 fellows from the 3MTT Nigeria program will support the project.
The LLM's development involved a partnership between Awarritech, DataDotOrg, NITDA, and NCAIR. To further boost AI project development, a partnership between 21st Century Technologies, Galaxy Backbone, and NCAIR Nigeria was announced. 21st Century Technologies is also funding the acquisition of GPUs for Nigeria's national computing capacity, housed at Galaxy Backbone Data Centre, and providing the initial computing power for the project.
The relaunch of the National Centre for AI and Robotics (NCAIR) will promote research and development on emerging technologies. With the unveiling of the LLM, Nigeria is poised to take a leading role in AI development in Africa, backed by strong partnerships and robust infrastructure.
