Munich Airport Reopens After Second Overnight Drone Closure

Munich Airport has reopened after a second overnight closure in less than 24 hours due to drone sightings. The incident impacted thousands of passengers and raised concerns about potential links to Russia.

On Saturday morning, Munich Airport resumed operations after being closed for several hours due to drone sightings. This is the second such closure in less than a day, following a previous incident on Thursday night that affected nearly 3,000 passengers. Two drones were spotted near the airport's runways before they could be identified. Despite extensive police searches, the drone operators remain unidentified.

The recent drone sightings in Germany are part of a series of incidents across Europe. Denmark and Belgium have also reported drone sightings at defense facilities and airports in recent weeks. Lithuania's main airport briefly closed due to a 'possible series of balloons'. European authorities are investigating whether these incidents could be linked to Russia, although no claims of involvement have been confirmed.

Germany's interior minister plans to discuss a 'drone detection and defense plan' with European counterparts in response to the recent incidents. The impact on Munich Airport alone has been significant, with at least 6,500 passengers affected and causing delays throughout Saturday. As investigations continue, European authorities remain vigilant to ensure the safety of air travelers.
