The chaos began on Thursday evening when drones of unknown origin were spotted near the airport. This led to the temporary halt of flight operations, affecting numerous departures and arrivals. Around 3000 passengers were impacted, with hundreds forced to spend the night in terminals.
Flight operations resumed early Friday morning but were again disrupted in the evening due to further suspected drone sightings. The exact number of affected travelers remains unclear.
Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has announced plans to strengthen security measures against drones at airports. He intends to involve the German Armed Forces, alongside federal and state police, in establishing a joint drone defense center.
Munich Airport's operations were severely disrupted by suspected drone sightings this week. While flight operations have since resumed, the investigation into these incidents continues. Dobrindt plans to present a draft for a new Air Security Act soon, aiming to bolster security measures at airports.
