Kazakhstan's Internal Affairs Minister Holds Discussion with Meta's Public Policy Director
The Minister of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan, Yerzhan Sadenov, recently held a meeting with the Director of Public Policy at Meta, Sarim Ali Aziz, as reported by Polisia.kz. Meta, one of the world's largest technology companies, oversees popular platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. As digital communications expand, these resources introduce new opportunities, yet they also attract the attention of criminals.
The meeting focused on the rising challenges in the digital environment. The discussion centered on the misuse of social platforms for fraudulent schemes, drug trafficking, the dissemination of pornographic content, and the distribution of illegal information.
Sadenov underscored the importance of immediate content blocking and fostering direct lines of communication with platform administrators. The Meta representative offered support for the ministry's initiatives, and the two parties agreed on the establishment of a direct communication channel, the formation of a joint working group, and the launch of educational campaigns to improve users' legal and financial literacy.
Both parties made known their intentions to reinforce their partnership in digital security and countering internet threats following the meeting.
Recently, Meta has secured significant legal victories, such as a $167 million judgment against NSO Group for unauthorized use of spyware targeting WhatsApp users. Meta continues to face scrutiny and pressure regarding content moderation, particularly in relation to harmful and illegal content. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan's digital environment has come under threats from cyber espionage campaigns, with government entities targeted by Russia-linked groups aiming to gather diplomatic and economic intelligence.
