Microsoft Extends Windows 10 Support in EEA to 2025 Amid Consumer Pressure
Microsoft has revised its support plan for Windows 10 in the European Economic Area, including Germany, due to pressure from consumer advocates. Initially set to end on October 14, 2023, users will now have two options to continue receiving updates from Microsoft 365.
Microsoft 365 is offering private users two ways to extend security updates for Windows 10. They can either set up an account with Microsoft 365 or pay a one-time fee of $30 plus taxes. However, even those who pay must still register with Microsoft 365.
This extension pushes the problem back to October 14, 2025, but it's a significant change from the original plan. Originally, users were only supposed to receive updates until October 14, 2023, unless they purchased the paid update extension from Microsoft 365. The change is likely due to pressure from Euroconsumers, which saw the original plan as a violation of EU law.
With Windows 10 being the most widely used operating system in Germany, this change affects a significant number of users. While Microsoft 365's offer provides more options, users should be aware that without updates, their systems will remain vulnerable to security threats after October 14, 2025.
