Microsoft & Adobe Patch Critical Vulnerabilities in October 2015
Microsoft and Adobe have released critical security updates to address vulnerabilities in their software. The October 2015 Patch Tuesday from Microsoft addressed local privilege escalation in Windows and various remote code execution (RCE) issues in Internet Explorer and Office. Adobe also patched critical vulnerabilities in Adobe Reader and Flash.
Microsoft's MS15-111 patched local privilege escalation vulnerabilities in Windows, affecting all versions from Vista to Windows 10. Internet Explorer had a critical bulletin (MS15-106) with 14 fixes, seven of which were critical and could lead to RCE. MS15-107 and MS15-108 were related, with MS15-107 addressing two issues in the new Edge browser and MS15-108 repackaging four issues for Internet Explorer 7.
MS15-110 addressed six issues in Office, mostly in Excel, with five resulting in RCE. Adobe also published updates for Adobe Reader (APSB15-24) and Flash (APSB15-25) addressing critical vulnerabilities that could allow an attacker to execute code within the context of the user. In October 2015, Adobe released an update for Reader and Flash to fix a large number of critical vulnerabilities that could allow an attacker to execute code in the user's context. Additionally, MS15-109 addressed a vulnerability in Windows shell that could lead to RCE through email or web browsing.
The October 2015 Patch Tuesday, despite having only six bulletins, covered important products. Oracle's CPU was scheduled for later that month, on the 20th. Users are advised to apply these updates promptly to protect against potential security threats.
