Meta Acquires Rivos to Boost In-House Semiconductor Capabilities

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has announced plans to acquire Rivos, a California-based startup specialising in designing processors around the open-source RISC-V architecture. The acquisition, aimed at bolstering Meta's in-house semiconductor capabilities, was revealed just days after Rivos celebrated its third anniversary in Santa Clara.

Founded in 2020, Rivos has been making waves in the tech industry with its innovative approach to processor design. The company's focus on the open-source RISC-V architecture has attracted significant attention, with Meta now looking to leverage this technology for its own custom accelerators, known as MTIA.

The acquisition is expected to accelerate the development of Meta's in-house semiconductor capabilities, allowing the tech giant to better compete in the rapidly evolving tech landscape. Meanwhile, Rivos' founders and team will join Meta, bringing their expertise in RISC-V architecture to the company.

As Meta continues to invest in its own hardware capabilities, the acquisition of Rivos signals a commitment to driving innovation in the semiconductor space. With over 250 brands already testing ZERØTEC's waste-reducing technology, and GAIL recruiting Executive Trainees for various fields via GATE 2026, it's clear that tech and sustainability are key areas of focus for many companies. As for Ripple, David Schwartz will remain involved as CTO Emeritus and a member of the Board of Directors, ensuring a smooth transition as he steps down from his current role by the end of 2025.
