The REWE Delivery Service has taken a significant step towards emission-free delivery options, integrating 64 new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter electric vans into its fleet. This marks the largest single order REWE Delivery Service has placed with Mercedes-Benz, as part of the REWE Group's overarching sustainability strategy aiming to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

The eSprinter, a versatile vehicle well-suited for urban and suburban delivery operations, offers a balance of range, cargo capacity, and electric efficiency. Under real-world driving conditions, it boasts a range of about 140 miles at 75 mph, with a WLTP-rated range up to 161 miles (259 km) depending on battery size. The latest version features a 113 kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery, paired with a permanent-magnet synchronous AC motor producing 201 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.

The eSprinter's key specifications include an onboard charger of 9.6 kW and a peak DC fast-charging rate of 115 kW. It is governed at 75 mph, boasts a cargo volume of approximately 488 cubic feet, and measures 170 inches in wheelbase, 280.4 inches in length, 79.5 inches in width, and 107.1 inches in height. The curb weight is roughly 7000 lbs, and it can carry up to 1,275 kilograms.

The first delivery of these new electric delivery vans took place at the Fulfillment Center in Berlin-Tempelhof. Initially, these vehicles will be deployed in Berlin, with Neuss following in September. Customers can specify their preferred delivery time during the order process.

The eSprinters will be charged only overnight, and the site's infrastructure has been equipped with 42 charging stations, each with 22 kW, to charge the vehicles with green electricity. The vehicles will be immediately recognizable with the inscription "This vehicle runs 100% electrically!".

Clemens Bauer, Director of REWE E-Commerce, stated, "Wherever possible, electric vehicles will replace conventional vehicles with internal combustion engines in our delivery service. This is a significant step towards emission-free delivery options."

The eSprinters will be deployed in eye-catching vehicle designs in the colors mango, fig, and peach. REWE Delivery Service factors in reliability, range, and payload when using the eSprinter, and the company is investing around €5 million in the new electric vehicles and expanding charging infrastructure. However, the investment amount for the new vehicle design and the expansion of charging infrastructure for the eSprinters remains undisclosed.

This initiative underscores REWE Delivery Service's commitment to optimized route planning, taking environmentally friendly routes and fully utilizing vehicles to avoid unnecessary trips or detours, all in the pursuit of sustainable delivery goals.
