Mercedes and Geely collaborate further, unveiling the versatile smart #5 model

The Smart brand, in partnership with Chinese EV company Geely, has unveiled its newest model for Europe – the Smart #5. This mid-size SUV offers a unique blend of style, technology, and performance, making it a competitive contender in the hotly contested SUV market.

The Smart #5 stands out with its combination of a 1.5-litre turbocharged gasoline engine and a powerful electric motor, backed by a lithium iron phosphate battery with a capacity exceeding 40 kWh. This setup delivers an impressive electric driving range of approximately 250 km (155 miles) under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), with a total combined driving range of up to around 1600 km (995 miles).

The Smart #5's interior offers a spacious layout, with a long wheelbase and numerous storage compartments. The Premium edition, in particular, emphasizes interior colour and trim quality, boasting a cartoonish in-car avatar that might be considered a novelty but could potentially become a drawback.

The vehicle's tech features are designed to surpass its competitors, offering LED reading lights, a head-up display system, and a 20-speaker Dolby Atmos-enabled Sennheiser audio system. The Summit Edition, a higher-end trim, boasts additional off-roading capabilities, including five different modes (Adaptive, Sand, Snow, Mud, and Rock).

Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are partially enabled by roof-mounted lidar technology and dual NVIDIA Orin processors, enhancing autonomous and safety capabilities. The Summit Edition also features a roof platform, a fold-out side ladder for access, and an electric trailer hitch, further enhancing its off-roading capabilities.

The Smart #5 will go on sale in the UK in late 2025. Its seating system can be folded flat, making it suitable for car camping, and it comes with Vehicle-to-Load power capabilities, allowing devices to be charged within the vehicle.

In the competitive mid-size SUV segment, the Smart #5 competes with cars like the Tesla Model Y, BMW iX3, and Audi Q4. The Summit Edition, with its swift 0-62mph sprint of less than five seconds, promises to deliver a thrilling driving experience.
