Master Monitor Displays: Switch Main or Swap Numbers

Discover how to manage your monitor displays with ease. This guide, co-authored by Nicole Levine, MFA, a seasoned technology writer, has been viewed over 1.1 million times. You can easily switch your main display in Windows settings. Right-click on your desktop, select 'Display settings', drag your monitors into the desired order, choose the primary display, and click 'Apply'.

If you're using a desktop PC with two monitors, you can swap their numbers using the registry. Disconnect all but the primary monitor, open the Registry Editor, rename 'Configuration' and 'Connectivity' keys, shut down, connect the desired Monitor 1, and power on. Then, plug in the second monitor.

However, if you're using a laptop, the built-in monitor remains Monitor 1. Some video conferencing software may prioritize monitor numbers over display settings, potentially sharing the wrong screen.

Mastering your monitor displays enhances your productivity. Follow these steps to change your main display or swap monitor numbers. Remember, some software may behave differently, so be prepared to adjust your settings accordingly.
