Latest Release of Apple iOS 18.6.1 for iPhones: Is an Update Worth It?
In a move to enhance health monitoring capabilities on its devices, Apple has recently released iOS 18.6.1, an update that primarily focuses on re-enabling and redesigning the Blood Oxygen sensor function on Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 models sold in the United States.
The update is a welcome relief for millions of Apple Watch users as the blood oxygen monitoring feature had been unavailable on Series 10 models, as well as the black version of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 sold in the States.
However, early user feedback suggests that the update has brought about some issues on iPhones. Reports of unexpected shutdowns, abnormal battery drain, muted phone calls, and alarm failures have been noted, particularly on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro devices. It's worth noting that Apple has not announced any significant security patches or other major fixes with this minor point update.
Users experiencing these issues are encouraged to contact Apple Support, as these reports reflect early feedback and troubleshooting may be needed.
On a positive note, users who update their iPhones might find a snappier performance. The blood oxygen data, once analysed on the iPhone, can be found in the Health app under the Respiratory section. However, there can be a delay in syncing between the iPhone and Apple Watch for blood oxygen data. Blood oxygen levels cannot be seen on the watch face in the new update, but this only affects Apple Watches that previously had the feature disabled.
The update, a medium download of around 720MB, is recommended for users in the U.S. with an Apple Watch or those planning to get one in the future. It is compatible with all iPhones from 2018 onwards, including the iPhone 11 series, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 16 series, and second- and third-generation iPhone SE models.
Apple has not yet announced when the upcoming iOS 26 will be released, but it is expected to work with all these phones except the first three, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Plus, and iPhone XR.
For other users, there's no harm in updating and they might find a snappier iPhone. It's important to note that with the new update and a watchOS 11.6.1 update, the blood oxygen monitoring feature will be available on all compatible Apple Watches, which include Series 7, Series 8, Series 9, Apple Watch Ultra, and Apple Watch Ultra 2.
Finally, there are reports that another surprise update, iOS 18.6.2, could be released soon. This update is speculated to address the issues mentioned above. The final verdict on the update will be given on Friday, Aug. 22.
