Agnikul Cosmos, a trailblazing space-tech startup based in India, has made headlines with its latest innovation - the world's largest single-piece rocket engine. This monolithic marvel, made entirely by 3D printing a single Inconel metal piece, marks a significant leap forward in rocket engine production.

The engine, which measures a full meter in length, is a testament to Agnikul Cosmos' commitment to creating cheaper, faster, and more reliable rockets for on-demand space missions. The single-piece design eliminates the need for hundreds of individual parts, drastically reducing assembly complexity and manufacturing time. Traditional manufacturing methods can take up to 10–12 weeks, while the new engine can be produced in just 75 hours.

This streamlined approach also enhances structural integrity. With no weak points from joints or welds, the entire propulsion system - from fuel inlet to nozzle outlet - forms a continuous, seamless unit. This design not only improves durability under operational stresses but also results in a lighter, more reliable, and structurally stronger engine.

The engine's construction from high-performance superalloy Inconel, which can withstand extreme heat, corrosion, and mechanical stress, further bolsters its credentials. Agnikul Cosmos' innovative design and manufacturing method have been granted a US patent, underscoring its novelty and competitive advantage.

The company's journey began in 2017 at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, and since then, it has made significant strides. Its partnership with IIT Madras led to the inauguration of the Agnikul Rocket Factory-1, India's first private factory capable of building launch vehicles from start to finish.

Agnikul Cosmos' innovation also represents a breakthrough in industrial-scale additive manufacturing for aerospace. As more companies move toward creating single-piece designs due to the growing maturity of additive manufacturing (3D printing), Agnikul Cosmos is poised to lead the charge.

In a social media post, Agnikul Cosmos noted that they are "humbled to introduce the world's biggest single-piece 3D-printed inconel engine." This global first in both scale and complexity is a testament to India's growing influence in the global rocket industry, and it's a significant achievement that highlights Agnikul Cosmos' commitment to pushing the boundaries of what's possible in space travel.

Meanwhile, India's space programme has also been making waves. In August 2023, India successfully made history by becoming the first country to soft land a spacecraft on the Moon's south pole, with a remarkably low budget of just $75 million. This mission, known as Chandrayaan-3, further cements India's position as a major player in the global space race.
