L.A. Unveils Exhibition Titled: "NEO-JAPONISM: Society of Samurai and the Pioneering Influence of Technology"

The highly anticipated exhibition, NEO-JAPONISM | SAMURAI AND BEYOND, is set to open its doors at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles on February 14, 2025, and will run until September 1, 2025. This groundbreaking digital experience, a joint venture between NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) and JAPAN HOUSE, showcases rare Japanese cultural treasures, historical artifacts, and architecture through cutting-edge high-resolution 3D computer graphics (3DCG) and innovative technology [1][3].

This unique exhibition combines traditional Japanese elements, especially samurai weaponry and cultural artifacts, with advanced digital technology, allowing visitors to explore these treasures up close in a highly detailed and immersive way [3]. The use of high-res 3DCG and broadcast-grade imaging technology offers a new, interactive perspective on Japanese heritage beyond traditional museum displays.

The exhibition is divided into four distinct zones, each offering a unique insight into different periods of Japanese history. The medieval samurai world is presented through ultra-high-definition video 3DCG content and simulated castle architecture from NHK's renowned "Taiga" historical drama series. Visitors can delve into the Edo Period with work from Itō Jakuchū and Tsutaya Jūzaburō, including a 3DCG realization of Itō Jakuchū's Hyakka no zu and large-format projections of Utamaro and Sharaku's ukiyo-e by Tsutaya [3].

Interactive artworks include 3DCG presentations of 15th century samurai armor, an 800-year-old tea bowl, and a 17th century screen painting. The exhibition features interactive experiences with the Golden Hall of Chūson-ji Temple and the Shakōki Dogū, a cultural artifact from the late Jōmon-period. The Shakōki Dogū presentation includes a 3D-printed replica, identical in size and weight, offering insights into the original color and Jōmon rolled surface patterns [2].

In addition to the exhibition, related programs will run throughout its duration. More information about these programs can be found on the JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles website and social channels, including Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube, and LinkedIn [1].

NHK and its subsidiary NHK Enterprises (NEP) have used 3DCG technology to create a library of Japanese cultural artifacts, previously only accessible by visiting a museum. To further enhance the visitor's experience, a behind-the-scenes video details the 3D scanning, photography, and CG modeling process for the exhibition [1].

Yuko Kaifu, president of JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles, stated that the exhibition showcases a consistent 'Japanese-ness' underpinning Japan's historical cultural output and representing Japan's contribution to global culture and entertainment [4]. The exhibition gallery is located at 6801 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90028.

Admission to the exhibition is free, and it is open daily from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. (Mon. - Fri.) and 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. (Sat. - Sun.) [1]. As JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles, an innovative project with three hubs (London, Los Angeles, and São Paulo), continues to nurture a deeper understanding of Japan in the international community, NEO-JAPONISM | SAMURAI AND BEYOND promises to be an unforgettable journey through Japanese history and culture.
