Kia's Electric Vans Equipped with Interchangeable Bodies Have Officially Materialized
The Kia PV5, a groundbreaking modular utility vehicle built on an electric skateboard platform, has officially entered production as part of Kia's "Platform Beyond Vehicle" (PBV) line. This innovative vehicle, priced at an equivalent of £44,000 in the U.K., offers a flexible and adaptable design, making it a standout in the electric vehicle market.
The PV5's unique selling point is its 'Flexible Body System', which enables up to 16 different vehicle configurations, optimised for various user needs. Powering the PV5 is a standard integrated driving motor system, producing 120 kW (163 hp) and 250 Nm (25.5 kgf·m) of torque. The vehicle comes with three types of battery systems: NCM 71.2 kWh, NCM 51.5 kWh, and LFP 43.3 kWh (exclusively for overseas markets).
The passenger version of the PV5, built on the long-body base, offers multiple seating options, including with or without third-row seating, and the option to swap second-row bench for captain's chairs. Kia has also designed a wheelchair-accessible version of the PV5, showcased during PV5 Tech Day in Korea.
In comparison to the Volkswagen ID.Buzz, which starts at £60K, the PV5 presents an attractive option for those seeking a versatile and affordable electric vehicle. However, Kia has no plans to bring its PBV range to the United States due to tariff issues and the imminent end of EV tax credits.
The PV5 will be available in various body styles in the coming months, including a chassis cab and accessories focused on camping. Kia also plans multiple PV5 variants, including different body types such as mini-vans, camper vans, luxury "Premium" models, and pickup trucks. These new variants will leverage the modular E-GMP.S platform production starting in 2025.
The PV5 is currently launched with production begun in 2025, with markets including overseas where the LFP battery version is offered. Pricing and availability have been announced in regions like Belux (Belgium and Luxembourg), indicating European market availability, with pre-orders active in some areas as of mid-2025.
