Johns Hopkins Scientists Unveil AI-Generated 'Visual Anagrams' to Study Human Perception

The team, led by researchers at the Perception & Mind Lab, created images that appear to be one object but transform into another when rotated. These visual anagrams include intriguing pairs like a bear-butterfly and an elephant-rabbit. The technique allows scientists to study aspects of image perception in unprecedented ways.
Initial experiments using these visual anagrams revealed intriguing results. Participants consistently perceived pictures of bears as larger than those of butterflies, even when both were rotated versions of the same image. This finding supports classic real-world size effects, demonstrating the power of visual anagrams in studying human cognition.
The team's work, supported by the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program, opens up new avenues in psychology and neuroscience. They hope to expand the use of visual anagrams to study animate and inanimate objects, potentially leading to a deeper understanding of the human mind.
