JioPC Transforms TVs into Cloud PCs for Rs 5,499

Jio Platforms has introduced JioPC, a novel service transforming TV screens into iCloud-powered personal computers. Bundled with broadband plans or available separately for Rs 5,499 (around $64), this internet-dependent service aims to boost digital adoption in under-penetrated markets.

JioPC offers a no-maintenance virtual PC experience through widely used TV sets. Users can access a cloud-based PC interface using a keyboard and mouse, ideal for browsing, productivity apps, educational tools, and online classes. Currently, it does not support webcams or printers. The service is currently in a limited free trial, rolling out to select customers via a waitlist.

The cloud system includes open-source software like LibreOffice for productivity tasks, and Microsoft Office applications can be used through a web browser. This launch aligns with previous indications from Akash Ambani about Reliance's iCloud-based PC plans four months ago. Notably, Jio's move coincides with talks between Reliance Industries and OpenAI for potential investment and commercial partnerships, including distributing Claude AI services in India via Jio.

JioPC's launch signals Jio Platforms' commitment to increasing digital accessibility, particularly in under-penetrated markets. By offering a no-maintenance, cloud-based PC through TV sets, JioPC opens up new possibilities for browsing, productivity, and education. As negotiations with OpenAI progress, the potential integration of AI services like Claude AI could further enhance JioPC's offerings.
