Is Aptera's assertion of a 2022 release for its $40,000 solar-powered electric vehicle on the horizon? Skepticism is warranted.

The electric vehicle (EV) landscape is about to see a new entrant, as Aptera Motors, a California-based company, prepares for the production of its innovative three-wheeled EV in 2025. The Aptera EV, with its lightweight design and solar-powered capabilities, has garnered more than 50,000 reservations, indicating a strong demand for this eco-friendly vehicle.

However, the road to production is not without its hurdles. Aptera is currently seeking an additional $60 million to fund development work, tooling, and assembly plant construction, having already raised $140 million from over 20,000 individual investors through crowdfunding since its relaunch in 2019.

The Aptera EV, initially offering front-wheel drive, plans to expand its offerings to include all-wheel-drive and versions with larger and smaller batteries in the future. Weighing just 2,200 pounds, the vehicle is classified as a motorcycle, allowing it to bypass certain regulations that would otherwise prevent a small company from putting a car on American roads.

Aptera has already made significant strides in the development process. The company has successfully transitioned beyond prototyping and is currently building validation vehicles for testing and refining the production model. The production-intent interior features a yoke steering wheel and a central infotainment touchscreen serving as the instrument cluster. The vehicle will also boast solar panels on the hood, dashboard, roof, and rear hatch, capable of generating up to 4 kWh of electricity per day.

Once in production, the Aptera EV is expected to have a range of 400 miles and a price of approximately $40,000. In its current state, the vehicle accelerates briskly, with Launch Edition cars expected to hit 60 mph in less than six seconds. The factory, designed to have just 12 stations for assembly, aims to build up to 80 cars per day, as advised by engineering consultant Sandy Munro.

Despite the challenges, Aptera remains optimistic about its future. The company is seeking investors to provide the remaining $60 million needed for production, with plans to start initial sales in 2026 and achieve full-scale production by 2028. With strong demand and a unique product, Aptera Motors is poised to make a significant impact in the EV market.
