In a significant move, Iqbal Khan, one of the star equity partners in the corporate, M&A, and private equity practice at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co (SAM), has transitioned to J. Sagar Associates (JSA). Accompanied by Ambarish and a team of around 20 lawyers, this move enhances JSA's M&A practice considerably [1].

This shift in legal talent marks a strategic bolstering of JSA's capabilities in mergers and acquisitions. The departure of key partners and a sizable team from a top-tier firm like SAM indicates JSA's commitment to expanding its capacity to handle complex M&A transactions [1]. This move strengthens JSA's market position and potentially increases its competitive edge and prominence in the Indian corporate legal market.

The arrival of Iqbal Khan and his team is a testament to the institutional values of JSA, according to the firm's joint managing partners, Amit Kapur and Vivek K Chandy [1]. Iqbal Khan will lead JSA's national corporate/ M&A practice.

Khan's M&A vertical is one of the most sought-after corporate practices in the market. His clients include top conglomerates, sovereign wealth funds, and private equity giants such as TPG, Bain Capital, Brookfield, Advent, Apax, and KKR [2]. Notable transactions under Khan's guidance include representing TPG on its sale of some shareholding in Quality Care India to Blackstone, and advising Tata Technologies in its joint venture with BMW [2].

Moreover, Khan recently guided Reliance Industries and its media division Viacom18 on a planned $8.5 billion mega-merger with Walt Disney's Star India [3]. The team joining JSA includes Ambarish, Tanavi Mohanty, Ashid Basheer, and Devika Menon, among others [1].

JSA's M&A practice is set to benefit significantly from this talent infusion. With the addition of experienced M&A lawyers and partners, JSA will immediately enhance its ability to secure and execute high-profile, complex deals [1]. This move likely positions JSA for growth in the corporate law sector, especially in mergers and acquisitions.

The firm has also made other strategic hires, including Brijita Prakash, Santosh Vijay, and Rakesh Warrier in Bengaluru, Harshavardhan Abburi in Hyderabad, and former Trilegal counsel Anurag Shrivastav in Mumbai [4]. In JSA's meritocratic setup, partners across the equity spectrum are heard and involved in the running of the firm, offering more freedom to operate and strategic independence in matter management [5].
