Iowa's Prison Dashboards Slash Recidivism to Decade Low

Several US states, including Pennsylvania, California, Massachusetts, and Vermont, have adopted dashboards to monitor their incarcerated populations and provide public information. Iowa's Department of Corrections has also embraced this technology, leading to a significant reduction in recidivism rates.

Iowa's shift towards analytics-driven solutions reflects a broader trend in state correctional facilities. The new tools have helped manage prison populations and address issues like violence, health care, and workforce stability.

Four interactive dashboards were developed to tackle key challenges in Iowa's prison system. These replaced an outdated system of spreadsheets and ad hoc reports, enabling informed, data-driven decisions. The dashboards can pinpoint specific operational components within a corrections facility that need addressing.

One dashboard, the release candidate dashboard, assists parole boards in assessing inmates' readiness for release. Another, the early intervention dashboard, helps probation officers intervene before issues escalate. These tools have contributed to Iowa's recidivism rate hitting its lowest level in a decade at 32.8%.

The successful implementation of these dashboards in Iowa demonstrates the potential of technology-driven solutions in improving corrections systems. By providing data-backed answers to stakeholders and supporting staff retention, these tools can help reduce recidivism and enhance safety within prison systems.
