Interview Questions for Mike Flaxman, Vice President of Heavy.AI
Chatting with Mike Flaxman, Vice President of Product Development at Heavy.AI
Got a quick chat with Mike Flaxman, the VP of Product Development at Heavy.AI, a San Fran-based analytics company that makes geospatial data analysis a breeze for enterprises. Here's the lowdown on our little convo.
question: What's Heavy.AI all about?
answer: Heavy.AI was born with a dream to democratize big data. Our software lets you query, analyze, and visualize geographic and spatial data, all while uncovering nifty insights that help make those high-stakes decisions easier. We've teamed up with Nvidia for some GPU perfection, speeding up queries 10-100 times compared to traditional CPU-based databases (yeah, that speedy!). Got a hankering for weather models or telecom data? Our high-performance platform got you covered. Oh, and if you're into digital twins and scenario planning, they're our bread and butter too. Best part? Our tech works with both open-source canned data and your own enterprise data, making it accessible for all.
question: How did Heavy.AI master its AI models for analysis?
answer: We've put our faith in AI to give our products a mega-boost. When we attempted to get by with off-the-shelf AI models, we realized they weren't accurate enough, especially for high-stakes use cases. Plus, our clients crave transparency, so using external AI providers wasn't an option, 'cuz it'd limit our disclosure to clients. The existing models also weren't user-friendly with our spatial SQL and all its modish jargon. So, we crafted our own models by fine-tuning a humongous library of open-source bots.
We used a merry mix of industry-standard SQL benchmarks and ten thousand of our funky Q&A sets to make our bots real pros at understanding spatial SQL and the particular lingo of our target clients. We also added some smarts from a natural language processing technique called retrieval-augmented generation for context so our bots learn the nuanced, domain-specific knowledge that our customers require.
question: We heard Heavy.AI unveiled a new product called HeavyIQ. Tell me about its flashy features and benefits.
answer: HeavyIQ is here to rock your world, baby! It’s designed to let you fire up questions, and it'll whip up answers with stunning visualizations, like maps, graphs, and charts, ain’t no sweat! These swanky visualizations ain't just a pretty sight—they shave time for your team who'd lose precious minutes on external visualization tools. HeavyIQ also lets users customize these visualizations. We're still cookin' it, folks, but we got our sights set on enabling users to tweak every little detail, from colors to axes and scales, through our conversational interface! Currently, we're offerin' a whopping twelve input languages. The Heart and Soul of HeavyIQ lies in its seamless integration between its conversational interface and custom machine learning models.
This fusion of natural language interaction, killer analytics, and fine-tuned visualization is what we like to call—conversational analytics. The whole idea is to simplify exploring complex data and decision-making, making it more intuitive and accessible to the layperson.
question: How does the generative AI scene impact Heavy.AI?
answer: We're gaga over a few key trends, and we're integrating them into our strategy. First, as AI becomes more common in enterprise-y settings, the need for transparency and accountability is growin'. We're workin' on clarifyin' how we built our models. Second, we're totally smitten with linkin' language models to sleek interactive visualizations. Third, more sophisticated chatbots will boost AI's potential to increase productivity by carryin' multi-turn chats and refinin' analyses based on your needs! If you were to consult an expert with a query, that expert would pepper you with questions for the perfect answer, and we reckon AI is set to offer a similar experience! As AI generative capabilities sizzle away, our mission is to combine that intelligence with our high-performance spatial analytics to empower our clients with intoxicatingly intuitive and trustworthy tools.
question: What's Flaxman's challenges leading product dev at Heavy.AI?
answer: Strugglin' to balance breadth and depth in our geospatial capabilities has been Flaxman's biggest challenge. Do we become a master of ten awe-inspiring geographic things, or do we attempt a broader set of fifty or a hudred features that are just swell, but not perfect? Big questions for product dev, right?
This links to Heavy.AI's goal to transition towards generative AI-powered analytics. We've taken a lease on becomin' a distinguished leader in conversational spatial analytics, though it ain't a walk in the park when takin' on tech giants and well-funded startups. Still, the journey's been thrilling and rewarding, 'cuz there's precious little research on the topic! The rise of generative AI presents new obstacles, but also exciting possibilities to upgrade what we offer. Shaping the future of spatial analytics is a big responsibility, and Mike's all excited to redefine the way users interact with and derive insights from complex geospatial data.
