Internet Exchanges' Journey Through Time: From Historic Roots to Current Practices and Future Predictions

As the Internet continues to expand, the need for more efficient interconnection systems has become increasingly apparent. This need led to the evolution of Internet Exchanges (IXs), with Milan Internet eXchange (MIX) being one of the key players in Italy's digital landscape.

Initially, IXPs like MIX primarily facilitated regional data exchange and interconnected Internet Service Providers (ISPs). However, as data volumes exponentially increase, these exchanges will need to upgrade their infrastructure to handle the growing demand. MIX, an Internet Exchange Point in Italy, is no exception.

With over 427 Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs) and a capacity of 17.39 Terabits per second (Tb/s), MIX is the largest IXP in Italy. It currently manages peak traffic reaching 3083 Gb/s and a current throughput of 2254 Gb/s. MIX emphasizes public peering as a core service, optimizing network performance and data flow control for its members.

For the fifth consecutive year, MIX is organizing technical sessions driven by volunteer contributions to address emerging topics in the Internet ecosystem. The community participation survey for 2025’s agenda was recently conducted to gather input on relevant session topics and organizers.
