EcoFlow STREAM: Your Smarter Balcony Power Solution
Innovative Balcony-Based Energy Storage System Proves Tech-Savvy
By Klaus Wedekind
In today's energy-conscious world, making the most out of your balcony solar power is key—enter the EcoFlow STREAM. This sophisticated power storage system not just stores excess energy for later use, but also smartly distributes it within your home network. By utilizing dynamic tariffs, this system can work wonders, cutting down energy costs and boosting your overall energy efficiency.
A Range of Storage Options to Meet Your Needs
EcoFlow offers three STREAM battery storage options with a capacity of 1.92 kWh each. Each looks similar and can be expanded modularly. They store electricity efficiently using durable lithium iron phosphate cells (LiFePO4). EcoFlow promises that these cells retain at least 70% of their capacity after 6000 charge cycles, lasting up to 15 years with a warranty period of ten years.
The STREAM Ultra (950 euros) comes with an integrated bidirectional inverter and four solar connections (MPPT) as an all-in-one solution. It can handle up to 2 kW of solar input and output up to 2.3 kW of alternating current (AC) to directly connected devices. The STREAM Pro model offers three solar connections and a maximum input power of 1.5 kW. The STREAM AC Pro is a pure power storage system without solar connections and can serve as an extension battery for other STREAM models or be charged via the home network.
Sleek Design and Easy Installation
The STREAM storage systems are not small for their capacity, measuring 28 × 25 × 46 cm, but their tower design makes them easy to integrate into your home. With their stylish metallic finish, they can blend seamlessly with your home decor. The LED lights indicating the charge level can be a bit bothersome as they can't be turned off at night. If needed, the units can be moved to less ideal locations as they're protected against dust and water up to IP65. EcoFlow provides wall mounts for secure placement and an integrated heating function allows operation down to -20°C.
A Cinch to Set Up and Use
EcoFlow provided us with an STREAM Ultra and two STREAM AC Pro units for testing. Installation and commissioning couldn't be easier—simply connect the Ultra to solar modules (roof, balcony railing, or facade), then link it to the home network via a standard Schuko power outlet in the apartment. The devices are recognized in the corresponding EcoFlow app, requiring Wi-Fi connection and firmware updates to get it up and running. With the app, you can directly power multiple devices via two power outlets on top of the Ultra, offering up to 1.2 kW of power.
Sharing the Power Love
The STREAM system's standout feature is its intuitive communication and power-sharing between devices. Two storage units can be connected directly or via the home network, allowing up to 2.3 kW of power to be pooled together. This comes in handy when consuming more power than your system can generate. The devices interact with each other via Wi-Fi, automatically assigning and managing the power according to their current levels and needs. This flexible system supports up to 2000 W power sharing, making sure your connected devices have the energy they need as efficiently as possible.
Charging Strategies: Embrace the Sun or Go With the Flow
In most homes, charging STREAM units with solar power during peak sunlight hours makes the most sense. However, using additional grid power for charging may be more beneficial if you have a dynamic tariff, especially considering energy conversion losses. The real magic starts when dynamic tariffs come into play, as EcoFlow takes care of the rest by automatically optimizing charging times to exploit the ever-changing energy prices.
EcoFlow offers KI-Modus plans to help users make the most of their dynamic tariffs[1]. The premium version, priced around 10 euros per month or 100 euros annually, offers advanced optimization by considering individual energy consumption, solar input, and real-time energy rates. The free version, available after the three-month free trial, should suffice for most users.
Take Control of Your Energy Future
The EcoFlow STREAM system offers an excellent addition to balcony power plants, allowing more efficient use of generated power and reducing energy costs. It works even better with dynamic tariffs, providing enhanced savings opportunities. Even with fixed network prices, a suitable battery storage system for a balcony power plant can be a smart investment in the long run. In most cases, an STREAM Ultra unit should be sufficient for optimal results[1][2].
Whether you're a solar power enthusiast or simply looking for a more sustainable living solution, the EcoFlow STREAM system can help you make the most of your solar power, providing peace of mind and savings. Get ready to take your energy independence to new heights!
