India's First Indigenous Nuclear Submarine Fires Ballistic Missile
India's first indigenous nuclear submarine, INS Arihant, successfully test-fired a ballistic missile on Friday. This marks a significant milestone in India's nuclear deterrent programme.
The submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) was fired from INS Arihant, hitting its target in the Bay of Bengal with remarkable precision. This was the first time an Indian submarine launched a missile, rather than from a submerged platform. India is now the sixth country worldwide to achieve this capability.
The test, conducted in the early hours of Friday, proved the reliability of India's naval nuclear deterrent and confirmed the operational readiness of the INS Arihant class submarines. India operates three such submarines, with INS Arihant being the first to be launched in 2009 by Gursharan Kaur, the wife of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.
The successful test of the SLBM from INS Arihant underscores India's commitment to maintaining a credible nuclear deterrent. The missile, along with the K-15 and K-4, provides India with a strategic edge in its defence capabilities. The programme, one of the most complex weapons development initiatives undertaken by India, continues to make significant strides.
