On July 15, 2025, the Indian automotive industry witnessed a significant milestone as three global electric vehicle (EV) giants - Tesla, VinFast, and Kia - made their mark in the Indian EV market. This landmark day signified a pivotal moment for India's electric mobility scene, promising increased variety, international brand presence, and growing consumer interest in electric vehicles.

Tesla, the pioneer in EV technology, inaugurated its first showroom in India, located in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai. The Tesla Experience Centre showcased the company's range, with a highlight on the Model Y compact SUV, which offers advanced features such as autopilot and a driving range of up to 545 km - well suited for urban Indian conditions. Tesla had imported vehicles and accessories worth about $1 million in preparation and was actively recruiting staff in sales, service, and Autopilot development roles in India. The launch event ran from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with priority invitations extended to customers who reserved Tesla vehicles as far back as 2016.

VinFast, a Vietnamese EV manufacturer, opened bookings for its two upcoming electric SUVs in India, the VF6 and VF7 models. These launches mark VinFast’s official entry into the Indian electric SUV market, expanding consumer choices with Vietnamese EV offerings. The VF6 and VF7 are positioned as competitive, new SUV options amidst increasing EV adoption in India.

Kia, another global automotive giant, launched its locally manufactured electric car, the Carens Clavis EV, marking Kia’s entry into the Indian mass-market EV segment. The Carens Clavis EV is an electric MPV that comes with two battery pack options, aiming to appeal broadly to families and daily users. This launch signals Kia’s strategic push into the Indian EV market with a locally made product, expected to be competitively priced for Indian consumers.

These launches and booking openings on July 15, 2025, illustrate a significant expansion of the Indian EV market, promising increased variety, international brand presence, and growing consumer interest in electric vehicles. This coordinated activity also reflects the rising penetration of EVs in India, which had reached 4.4% in the passenger car segment by June 2025.

In addition to the launches, VinFast also announced that it will launch two electric vehicles on July 15, 2025, in India. The VF6 has a driving range of 399 km and is priced between ₹ 30 - 45 Lakhs, while the VF7 has a driving range of 450 km and is priced between ₹ 60 - 65 Lakhs. VinFast is setting up a 3S (Sales, Service & Spares) network in India, with retail operations commencing with 32 dealerships across 27 cities.

Mercedes-Benz is also joining the electric revolution, launching two electric vehicles on the same day. The EQB has a driving range of 423 km and is priced at ₹ 72.20 Lakhs, while the EQA has a driving range of 560 km and is priced at ₹ 67.20 Lakhs.

The Kia Carens Clavis EV is an all-electric version of the existing Carens Clavis, expected to be the next big car launch from Kia India. Meanwhile, Tesla CEO Elon Musk is expected to make an appearance at the Mumbai experience center. After Mumbai, Tesla plans to open a second experience center in New Delhi, India.

These developments underscore the growing importance of the Indian EV market, with major players vying for a piece of the action. As the government continues to invest in EV infrastructure and incentivise EV adoption, it is expected that the Indian EV market will continue to grow, offering consumers more choices and driving the transition towards a more sustainable future.
