Independent MP Proposes Bitcoin Recognition in Germany
Former AfD member Joana Cotar, now an independent MP, has submitted a draft proposal to the German Bundestag, titled 'Bitcoin in the Bundestag'. The initiative aims to educate politicians about Bitcoin's potential and advocate for its recognition as a legal tender.
Cotar's proposal includes several key points. Firstly, it suggests allowing citizens to pay taxes in Bitcoin, providing a legal claim for mining Bitcoins and operating a full node. Additionally, it explores using mining farms to stabilize the power grid and harnessing Bitcoin mining to unlock renewable energies.
The draft also warns against the potential risks of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC), highlighting their potential restrictions on cash and financial activities. It urges the German government to oppose the introduction of a digital euro and instead consider recognizing Bitcoin as a legal tender. Furthermore, it proposes improving framework conditions for future technologies, including Bitcoin, and actively shaping citizens' basic rights.
Joana Cotar's initiative, born out of her departure from the AfD party due to internal disagreements, marks a significant step in bringing Bitcoin to the forefront of German politics. Her draft proposal, if adopted, could pave the way for a more cryptocurrency-friendly Germany, with potential benefits for both citizens and the environment.
