In a surprising turn of events, the state of Baden-Württemberg has reported a significant increase in injured hedgehogs, attributed to the growing popularity of mowing robots. This rise in injuries coincides with an impressive surge in the sales of these robots, with approximately 110,000 units sold between January and April, marking a 45% increase from the previous year. Revenue from these sales surged by 64% to around 125 million euros during the same period.

The success of lawn mowing robots is undeniable, with their easy operation, low noise levels, and relatively eco-friendly operation making them a popular choice among homeowners. However, experts, including representatives from BUND and the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, have long called for a nighttime ban on these robots due to concerns about their impact on wildlife.

The concerns are not unfounded. Lawn mowing robots, operating under the cover of darkness, pose a threat to hedgehogs, insects, amphibians, and other nocturnal animals. Cities such as Cologne and Mainz have already taken steps to address this issue, implementing a nighttime ban on these robots.

However, this issue is a subject of debate among conservationists. On one hand, proponents of the ban argue that banning nighttime operation can help maintain a peaceful environment, adhering to noise pollution standards, and enhance safety by reducing potential accidents or collisions with people or pets. Implementing clear rules can also ease enforcement and compliance with existing laws.

On the other hand, opponents argue that nighttime operation offers convenience and efficiency, as it avoids daytime foot traffic and allows for more flexible scheduling. They also point out that modern lawn mowing robots often come equipped with advanced sensors and safety features that mitigate risks, making nighttime use safer. Allowing nighttime operation might encourage more people to use these robots, potentially increasing their economic and environmental benefits.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether other cities in Germany will follow suit and implement a nighttime ban on lawn mowing robots. The German Federation for Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) argues that forgoing lawn mowing robots benefits hedgehogs, insects, amphibians, and other animals, and it is hoped that this perspective will sway more cities towards implementing such bans.

The surge in smart-home devices sales, such as lawn mowing robots, has raised concerns among experts, including BUND and the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research. These gadgets, particularly the lawn mowing robots, pose a threat to nocturnal animals like hedgehogs, insects, and amphibians when they operate under the cover of darkness.
