Imgur Blocks UK Users Amidst ICO Data Probe
Imgur, the popular image-sharing platform, has restricted access for UK users since September 30, 2025, following a notice of intent to fine its parent company, MediaLab, by the UK's data watchdog, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). The ICO described this move as a 'commercial decision' by Imgur.
The ICO opened an investigation in March 2025 into Imgur, TikTok, and Reddit, focusing on their handling of children's data and age verification. This investigation is part of the ICO's Children's code strategy, not the Online Safety Act. Despite the investigation, Imgur users can still request copies of their data or delete it via the platform's Help Center. However, Imgur may still process limited personal data even after users delete their accounts, where necessary and lawful.
In response to the ICO's investigation, Fruitlab, a blockchain-based social network, exited the UK after refusing to comply. The ICO may still penalize MediaLab, even if Imgur continues to block UK users. The ICO has previously fined illegal robo-callers half a million pounds and warned parents about children's online activities.
Imgur's block on UK users remains in place, with the ICO's investigation ongoing. UK users can still manage their data through Imgur's Help Center, but the platform may continue to process limited personal data. The ICO continues to monitor and enforce data protection laws, with potential penalties for non-compliance.
