Ikea Embraces Green Energy: Freiburg Store Leads the Way

Ikea, the popular furniture retailer, is making significant strides in embracing sustainable energy solutions. The latest development comes from Ikea Freiburg, which has partnered with charging infrastructure provider Mer to open a charging park in the city of Freiburg, Baden-Württemberg. This marks the sixth such facility in Germany and the first comprehensive charging park in the south of the country.

The charging park offers three pricing tiers for electric vehicle charging – Price Level A, B, and C. Price Level A is applicable within Düsseldorf, while Price Levels B and C are for onward journeys outside of Düsseldorf. The use of P+R (Park and Ride) car parks is free of charge, but charges apply for onward travel depending on the selected pricing tier.

In addition to the charging infrastructure, Ikea, in collaboration with Svea Solar, is offering comprehensive energy solutions for homes. These offerings include solar panels, energy storage systems, and home energy management systems. The aim is to promote sustainable, clean energy for customers, enabling them to produce and store their own electricity, thus integrating renewable energy solutions with their home needs.

Ikea's commitment to sustainability is evident in the transformation of the Freiburg store. The store features a 2,000-kWp photovoltaic system, a switch to heat pump technology, and CO2-based refrigeration with lower power consumption. These changes are expected to save around 71,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.

Thorsten Bauer, the manager of Ikea Freiburg, stated that the charging park aims to make electromobility more accessible. The store is also making strides in water conservation. With the introduction of infrared heaters in the restaurant, Ikea Freiburg saves around 800,000 liters of water per year.

These initiatives have resulted in a significant reduction in CO2 emissions for Ikea Freiburg. The store has reduced its CO2 emissions by over 85% within a year, making it one of Germany's most climate-friendly stores. Freiburg joins other locations such as Waltersdorf, Oldenburg, Bielefeld, Wetzlar, and Chemnitz, which also feature comprehensive charging parks.

Ikea's collaboration with Svea Solar and Mer is part of a broader commitment to sustainable energy. By 2028, Ikea aims to create over 1,000 new charging points at all 54 Ikea stores. The company is also collaborating with Svea Solar to bring smart energy solutions to customers' homes, including photovoltaic systems, wallboxes, heat pumps, and recently, balcony power plants with storage.

This commitment to sustainability reflects Ikea's vision of creating a better everyday life for the many people. By embracing green energy, Ikea is not only reducing its carbon footprint but also empowering its customers to do the same.
