DHL and Hyperview Saudi Initiate Hydrogen-Powered Truck Trial in Jubail to Assess Clean Freight under Vision 2030
In a significant move towards sustainable logistics, DHL Global Forwarding has partnered with Hyperview Saudi to trial a hydrogen-powered truck in the industrial city of Jubail. This collaboration involves a three-month proof-of-concept trial with the HTO2.1 truck model, a heavy-duty hydrogen vehicle tailored for DHL's operations.
The trial aims to evaluate the truck's performance, cost-efficiency, and emissions savings in real-world operating conditions. The initiative aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, which promotes clean energy and innovation. This pilot is part of DHL's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The HTO2.1 truck, designed for long-haul transport with intelligent driving technology and advanced sensors, will operate on DHL's designated logistics routes in Jubail. The goal is to test the vehicle's performance in the high-temperature, high-demand conditions common in the region.
DHL has 700 rental trucks in Saudi Arabia, and this trial will assess hydrogen as a long-term fuel alternative for its fleet. It will also evaluate the local hydrogen refueling infrastructure, critical for broader adoption. Hyperview is working with national partners to help develop this network.
"Our aim is to demonstrate that hydrogen is both environmentally essential and commercially viable for freight," said Dr. Feilong Liu, CEO of Hyperview. The collaboration is supported by Prosperity7 Ventures, one of Hyperview's early investors.
Successful implementation could encourage wider adoption of hydrogen-powered trucks in the region and further position Saudi Arabia as a leader in clean tech adoption, in line with Vision 2030.
