This integration will allow Disney to bundle ad sales more efficiently and provide users with enhanced personalization and convenience while still allowing individual subscriptions to each service.
The merge is expected to bring more eyeballs, fewer cancellations, and a bigger payday from advertisers due to the consolidation [1]. It also aims to strengthen Disney's streaming offering and grow profitability through higher engagement and lowered churn.
The merge will result in a unified Disney+ and Hulu streaming app experience, where shows and movies from both platforms will be available in a single app. Work on improving the Disney+ app is already underway, with the Disney+ app set to feature a more personalized homepage in the coming months.
Hulu, which launched in 2007 as a joint venture between News Corp and NBCUniversal, was taken over by Disney in 2019 after the company acquired 21st Century Fox. Disney has since acquired the remaining shares from AT&T and Comcast in an unspecified year and recently bought out Comcast's remaining stake in Hulu [1].
Some media outlets have reported that the Hulu app will be phased out next year, but Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding this matter. Standalone subscriptions for each service (Disney+ and Hulu) will still be available.
Disney's long-awaited ESPN streaming service, which will be the exclusive U.S. home for all WWE premium live events starting in 2026, including WrestleMania, Royal Rumble, and SummerSlam, will launch on August 21 [4]. The ESPN streaming service's unlimited plan will cost $29.99 a month.
As of today, the company's Disney+ and Hulu bundle plan starts at $10.99 a month. Disney+ subscribers have already been able to access Hulu series like The Handmaid's Tale, The Bear, and Shōgun on the Disney+ app since 2023, only for users subscribed to both platforms [5].
With the merge, Disney is set to offer a more comprehensive streaming experience, combining the best of entertainment, news, and live sports under a single platform.
