Historic Racecourse Embraces Modern Ticketing Methods with NFC Technology and Digital Wallets
Chester Racecourse, the world's oldest operational racecourse, has taken a significant step forward in its commitment to delivering modern, memorable experiences for guests by adopting Near Field Communication (NFC)-based ticketing technology from HID.
The new system, which offers guests e-tickets downloadable to their smartphones, provides a host of benefits that significantly improve sports and event management.
One of the key advantages is the encrypted, instant e-ticket delivery. Guests receive their tickets within seconds directly to their smartphones upon purchase, enhancing convenience and security. The tickets come with embedded guidance such as dress code, race program, and venue directions, while reminders appear on guests' devices as they approach the venue.
To address poor mobile signal conditions, Chester Racecourse has deployed 45 Janam XT3 rugged mobile computers capable of offline NFC ticket scanning. These devices, which can scan tickets in under a second, even in low light, ensure swift, reliable access even in peak times and low-signal areas, reducing congestion and wait times.
To support the NFC system, Chester Racecourse has upgraded its network infrastructure. This includes the deployment of Wi-Fi 7 access points, advanced routers, switches, and robust 10-gigabit Ethernet connections to the Internet.
The NFC system also integrates with SeatGeek's ticket sales platform, enabling real-time updates in the access control solution. A bespoke API was written to integrate the two systems, eliminating a manual process previously used.
The system allows Chester Racecourse to know where people are in terms of enclosure and stands, providing real-time visibility of guest attendance. This is crucial for effective event management, as the racecourse can now determine the exact number of people who have entered, out of the tickets sold.
Gareth Simpson, Head of Racecourse Operations at Chester Race Company, has stated that delivering an excellent customer experience is critical. The NFC ticketing system helps Chester Racecourse meet its compliance with capacity obligations and consider forthcoming legislation such as Martyn's Law.
Chester Race Company, which also operates Bangor-on-Dee and Musselburgh racecourses, plans to expand NFC ticketing across its portfolio and explore additional features within HID's Event Management Platform (EMP), such as accreditation management for staff and contractors, and loyalty program integration.
With these improvements, Chester Racecourse continues to combine its rich history with leading-edge technology, aiming to create modern, memorable experiences for its over 200,000 annual guests during its 15-race season, including the Boodles May Festival and the Chester Cup. The new ticketing system also reduces ticket fraud by eliminating barcode sharing or resale opportunities by touts, ensuring a fair and secure experience for all.
Sports enthusiasts can enjoy a more efficient and secure experience at Chester Racecourse, thanks to the adoption of NFC-based ticketing technology. This technology, integrated with the SeatGeek ticket sales platform, allows guests to receive e-tickets and receive real-time updates in the access control solution, enhancing security and reducing ticket fraud.
