Starlink to Expand on Kazakhstan's Trains

Elon Musk's SpaceX Starlink internet has officially launched in Kazakhstan, with the Burabay Express train serving as the first to benefit from the technology. Anuar Ahmetjanov, chairman of the board of JSC "Passenger Transportation", has announced that Starlink will be installed on two more standard trains in Kazakhstan, with plans to connect all 25 'Talgo' trains if it proves economically feasible.

The Aktöbe - Almaty and Kyzylorda - Semey trains are expected to have Starlink installed by the end of this year, likely in October, as part of a pilot test. Starlink is technologically easier to provide internet to 'Talgo' trains in Kazakhstan, making it an attractive option for the national railway company, KTZ Trains.

Despite the decision to abandon 'Talgo' carriages in Kazakhstan, meaning no new ones will be added to the fleet, the operation of existing 'Talgo' trains will continue. KTZ Trains is expected to continue operating 'Talgo' trains until they reach the end of their service life. The decision to abandon 'Talgo' carriages does not affect the installation of Starlink on the trains.

Starlink performance on standard trains in Kazakhstan will be observed before scaling up the project. The old 'Talgo' carriages in Kazakhstan will continue to operate until the end of their service life. The success of Starlink on the Burabay Express train has proven itself well, and the technology is reported to have good quality in Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan is not planning to purchase any new 'Talgo' carriages, instead focusing on the potential of Starlink to improve the connectivity of its trains. If the pilot test on the Aktöbe - Almaty and Kyzylorda - Semey trains proves successful, it could pave the way for Starlink to be installed on all 25 'Talgo' trains in Kazakhstan.

In conclusion, the introduction of Starlink on Kazakhstan's trains marks an exciting step forward in the country's efforts to improve its railway connectivity. The initial test on the Aktöbe - Almaty and Kyzylorda - Semey trains will provide valuable insights into the feasibility and effectiveness of Starlink on 'Talgo' trains, potentially leading to its widespread adoption in Kazakhstan's railway network.
