Guangxi Region's Sericulture Industry Modernization Unveiled in South China: Xinhua Silk Road Report

In the heart of South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region lies Hechi, affectionately known as the 'new capital of Chinese silk.' This city has been leading the nation in silk production for an impressive 20 consecutive years, with its mulberry acreage and silkworm cocoon output consistently ranking first among all prefecture-level cities.

The sericulture industry in Hechi spans across 11 counties and districts and 131 townships, benefiting nearly one million farmers. The average annual household income from sericulture in Hechi exceeded 50,000 yuan in 2024.

The city's commitment to the industry is evident in its ambitious targets and plans. In 2022, Hechi issued a full industry-chain development plan with a target of 50 billion yuan in output value by 2025. The promotion event for Hechi's sericulture industry, branded as 'Gui,' was held in Beijing on September 10, 2025.

The Xinhua-Hechi Sericulture Industry Development Index, launched in May 2025 by the people's government of Hechi City and China Economic Information Service, aims to provide a scientific gauge of industry development, offer evidence-based support for policymaking, and deliver early warnings and guidance. However, the latest report did not mention any recent investments in agricultural funds or cocoon-silk loans.

The report did highlight the government's support for the industry, ranging from resource coordination to runway presentation. Yet, it did not mention the specific target of output value by 2025 or the three-year action plan with 32 measures across seven key areas, unveiled in 2024.

Hechi's advancement in the silk industry is not just about quantity but also quality. Advanced technologies such as collective silkworm rearing and automated reeling have been widely adopted, helping to elevate the city from a 'silk source' to a 'brand highland' with international stage presence. The 'Hechi silk' is making strides in transforming the city's image.

Moreover, Hechi is building a trusted data space, a China-ASEAN cocoon and silk trading center, and a digital innovation hub to enhance supply chain integration. These initiatives are expected to further bolster the city's position in the global silk market.

The Xinhua-Hechi Sericulture Industry Development Index report did not specifically mention these developments. However, the ongoing progress in Hechi's sericulture industry is undoubtedly a testament to the city's dedication and strategic planning.
