Growth in Google's advertising sector continues through advancements in artificial intelligence search technology
Google's AI-driven initiatives are reshaping its advertising business, leading to increased revenue and a stronger competitive stance against rivals like ChatGPT.
According to recent financial reports, Alphabet, Google's parent company, has seen a 14% increase in total revenue to $96.43 billion, with net income rising by 19.4% to nearly $28.2 billion. Advertising still constitutes the majority of Alphabet's revenue, with a 10.4% year-over-year increase in the last quarter, amounting to $71.34 billion (€60.6 billion). YouTube's ad revenue also grew by 13%, reaching approximately $9.8 billion.
Google's AI Overviews, AI-generated multi-sentence summaries displayed above traditional search results, are playing a significant role in this growth. Since their expansion in 2025, these summaries have led to a decline in organic click-through rates on informational sites, with paid clicks also falling. However, Google's Q2 2025 data reports a 12% year-over-year increase in Search revenue and over 10% more queries for search types featuring AI Overviews. This suggests that AI features encourage users, particularly younger demographics, to search more and ask new types of questions, evidencing expanded overall engagement rather than reduced search activity.
Google is prioritizing advertising spend toward its own properties such as YouTube, Discover, and other owned surfaces rather than third-party publisher websites. This shift, exemplified by the rise of Demand Gen campaigns and Performance Max, allows Google to retain full ad revenue and maintain control over user experience while reducing reliance on distributed network advertising that shares revenue with publishers.
To compete with chatbot services like ChatGPT, Google is integrating AI conversational features into Search, such as the AI Mode conversational interface with 100+ million active users. This reduces the need for users to go to separate chatbot platforms for AI-driven information. The strategic focus on owned content and AI-driven ad experiences positions Google to better monetize AI-powered search versus chatbot services that do not yet have comparable advertising business models or ecosystems.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai has stated that AI is positively influencing all aspects of the business. The company is also investing heavily in data center expansion, increasing its investments from $75 billion to $85 billion this year. Despite competition from AI rivals like OpenAI, Google's AI-driven transformation is enhancing user engagement by delivering richer AI-generated search answers and conversational AI experiences, encouraging more queries and deeper interaction. This, in turn, is strengthening Google's competitive position against chatbot rivals by embedding advanced AI directly into search and advertising, retaining users and advertiser spend within its ecosystem.
A study by Norstat reveals that around half of German AI users sometimes seek advice from ChatGPT and similar services instead of a search engine. However, the integration of AI-generated summaries into Google's search engine and the popularity of features among younger users, such as searches via camera captures and the ability to circle objects on smartphone displays, indicate that Google is well-positioned to retain its user base and continue its revenue growth. The stock rose by over 2% in after-hours trading, reflecting investor confidence in Google's AI-driven future.
