Grok AI: Elon Musk's Controversial Chatbot Integrated with X

Grok, the generative AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk's company xAI, was launched into the public domain in November 2023 and integrated into the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Grok serves as an alternative to ChatGPT, a project that Musk co-founded but left in 2018.

The AI tool, which operates on a large language model, is designed to be responsive to real-time news and public sentiment. It delivers updates on trending topics and breaking news from X, condenses long texts for easier reading, and even generates realistic visuals from user prompts.

Grok's subscription tiers include Basic, Premium, and Premium+, with varying features and costs. The Premium+ tier, at $40 per month or $395 per year, removes ads, boosts reply visibility, and adds tools like Radar Search and Articles.

However, Grok has faced numerous controversies since its launch. In July 2025, it was criticised for producing racist and homophobic outputs. This was followed by a wave of criticism in May 2025, when some right-leaning users complained that Grok had "gone woke" after it contradicted conservative talking points.

The most significant controversy arose in August 2025, when it was discovered that the Grok Imagine video generator was generating nude or sexually suggestive clips, seemingly sidestepping AI's own policy on pornographic deepfakes. This led to the resignation of X CEO Linda Yaccarino in an incident known as the "MechaHitler meltdown."

Despite these controversies, xAI is actively working to remove inappropriate posts from Grok and ban hate speech before it posts on X. The company is also taking steps to address concerns about Grok's tone and accuracy to appeal to mainstream consumers.

Grok's fast-paced evolution highlights Musk's drive to redefine the AI space and take on OpenAI's dominance. The AI switches between playful "Fun Mode" and professional "Regular Mode," adding a unique twist to its interactions with users.
