Google Discontinues Gmailify and POP3 Support, Migrates to IMAP
Google has announced significant changes to its email services. Starting January, the tech giant will discontinue the 'Gmailify' feature and support for the POP3 protocol. Users of work or education accounts are advised to contact their administrators for migration assistance.
Gmailify, introduced in 2016, allowed users to extend Gmail's features to external email accounts, including spam protection and categorized inbox. However, this service will no longer be available after January.
Google recommends using the IMAP protocol instead of POP3 for reading and sending emails from other mail accounts in the Gmail app. The company will also discontinue support for the POP3 protocol, affecting Gmail's ability to retrieve emails from third-party accounts using this method. These changes only impact email retrieval methods, and already synchronized emails in the Gmail account will remain unaffected.
Users are encouraged to update their email settings to use the IMAP protocol for third-party accounts. While there's no specific information about which email providers Google will support for IMAP retrieval, it's known that Gmail does not support IMAP for third-party accounts, though the Gmail mobile app does. The discontinuation of Gmailify means users won't have access to these features on third-party email accounts.
