In a significant move for the battery recycling industry, Swiss commodity giant Glencore has acquired Li-Cycle's European recycling plant in Magdeburg, Germany. Despite Li-Cycle filing for bankruptcy protection in May due to rising costs and financial challenges, the Magdeburg facility remains operational under Glencore's ownership.

The Magdeburg facility, which officially opened in September 2023, is one of the largest battery recycling plants in Europe. It has a processing capacity of about 10,000 tonnes of battery material annually on its first processing line. The plant employs approximately 66 people and contributes to Europe's battery recycling capacity.

The acquisition includes the Magdeburg spoke facility, along with other assets in North America and Li-Cycle's intellectual property. Glencore intends to continue operating the Magdeburg plant under its Glencore Battery Recycling division while strengthening its battery recycling business.

The plant processes car batteries into "black mass," from which valuable raw materials such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt are extracted through specialized processes. These raw materials are part of the value chain for battery recycling that Glencore is developing in Italy.

Glencore, one of the world's largest commodity companies based in Zürich, announced the acquisition on its website on Friday. The acquisition marks Li-Cycle's entry into the European market.

Interestingly, Glencore is also involved in one of the 47 EU projects on critical raw materials, aiming to develop a value chain for battery recycling in Italy. This move is a significant step towards a more sustainable and circular economy in the battery industry.

Despite the challenges faced by Li-Cycle, the Magdeburg recycling operations continue to play a crucial role in Europe's battery recycling efforts under Glencore's ownership. The acquisition underscores the growing importance of battery recycling in the face of increasing demand for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage systems.

  1. The Magdeburg facility, now under Glencore's ownership following the acquisition of Li-Cycle's European recycling plant, is a significant player in Europe's employment sector, employing approximately 66 people in environmental-science, technology, and finance roles related to battery recycling.
  2. As part of Glencore's commitment to a more sustainable and circular battery industry, the Magdeburg facility's employment policy aligns with the European Union's goals, contributing to the EC's efforts in science, technology, and environmental conservation.
