Volvo's Swedish Sprawler - Volvo EM90: An Angular Behemoth with a Lavish Interior

Gigantically constructed Volvo EM90 boasts luxurious interior cabin.

Remember the spacious Volvos of days gone by with their angular station wagons? Well, the Swedes aren't resting on their laurels, having ventured into uncharted territory by unveiling their first van in China. While it’s not yet confirmed if they'll bring this colossus to our shores, it's sure to charm anyone stepping inside with its apartment-like coziness.

Stumble into the Volvo EM90, and you might as well be walking into a high-end furniture store, with more plush seats than your living room and more tech gadgets than Media Markt. The ample space of the 5.21 meter long vehicle makes you feel as if you're in a hotel suite, not a car.

Unsurprisingly, Volvo didn't just whip up the EM90 on a whim. The Nordic stalwarts teamed up with their Chinese parent company, Geely, and used the 009 from sister brand Zeekr as a foundation. The arrangement lends the EM90 an 116 kWh battery that showcases an impressive range of 738 kilometers in a relaxed Chinese cycle and a rapid charging speed, effortlessly charging from 10 to 80 percent in 28 minutes.

However, the drive doesn't set the world ablaze with a 272 PS output, which may seem modest for a 2.8 tonne behemoth. But with an almost explosive torque development typical of electric motors, the 343 Nm is more than enough for a leisurely, refined driving experience, perfect for this new-age van's passengers, reclining in their cushy seats.

Yet, the luxury seats are reserved exclusively for the second row, while the rear offers a relatively ordinary bench. Despite this, the generous 3.21 meter wheelbase makes the rear more comfortable compared to most other Volvos. Also, the 535 liters of trunk space available even with full seating means you can neatly pack a few Billy bookcases without running into storage problems.

The EM90's design is distinctly Chinese, yet its ambiance oozes Swedish sophistication, as refined as can be. From soft, muted colors and a minimalist design to a soothing austerity that maintains a warm, cozy vibe, it's reminiscent of an upscale corner of a Swedish furniture store without the hassle of self-assembly.

The otherworldly Sliding door glides open with the push of a button, and once inside, you are greeted by climate-controlled seats and a massage function for your back. The chairs can be reclined for optimal comfort while you immerse yourself in the onboard infotainment at eye-level. If you prefer to work during your journey, a table can be pulled out from the armrest.

The lavish equipment in the rear is primarily managed via touch-sensitive strips integrated into the doors, illuminated with symbols and small displays. Volkswagen could certainly draw inspiration from this user-friendly control system.

Regarding the “one-touch” feature, the EM90's rear equipment is primarily operated via touch strips, which are elegantly integrated into the doors with illuminated symbols or small displays. VW could take a leaf out of their book with its sliders.

The luxury seat is only available in the second row, with the rear offering a relatively ordinary bench. However, the 3.21-meter wheelbase results in a more comfortable second-row experience than in most other Volvos. Even with full seating, there are minimal storage restrictions with the 535 liters of trunk space always available. The space can be increased to 2376 liters by compacting or folding items, and casual bookcase transportation is possible.

Geely and Volvo opted to keep the EM90's price tag under wraps, but sources predict an expected price range of around $114,000 in overseas markets. The Swedes have not mentioned any plans to bring the EM90 to us, but wealthy Europeans have started embracing luxury limos for lounging and stretching out.

The luxury-focused Lexus LM has already made its way to our shores, and Mercedes has garnered interest with the next V-Class's first-class lounge on wheels in Shanghai. If the Swedes play their cards right, they might just edge out the Germans with the EM90 and set sail westwards sooner rather than later. Luckily for us, only time will tell if we'll be sharing the road with these reclining luxury vans anytime soon.
