Germany's September 2025 EV Surge: Volkswagen Leads, Tesla Slips
In September 2025, Germany witnessed a notable shift in its car market, with electric vehicles (EVs) gaining significant traction. Despite a slight dip in overall car registrations, the number of EVs surged substantially, with Volkswagen leading the charge.
A total of 235,500 cars were newly registered in Germany last month, marking a 12.8 percent increase from the same period last year. However, this figure represented a 0.3 percent decrease since the beginning of the year. Companies accounted for around 66 percent of these registrations.
The real story unfolded in the EV segment. A whopping 39,400 EVs were registered in August 2025, and this number climbed to 45,500 in September, a staggering 32 percent increase from the same month last year. This meant nearly one in five new cars registered in September was battery-powered.
Volkswagen dominated the EV market, capturing 19.2 percent of all new registrations. Meanwhile, Tesla's registrations declined by 9.4 percent compared to the same month last year, with only 3,404 units registered in September. This decrease was even more pronounced compared to August 2025, with registrations falling by almost 40 percent.
SUVs remained the most popular segment, accounting for 33.6 percent of all new registrations.
September 2025 marked a significant milestone in Germany's car market, with EVs accounting for nearly one in five new registrations. While Tesla's registrations declined, Volkswagen solidified its position as the leading EV brand. Despite the overall increase in car registrations, the slight decrease since the beginning of the year suggested a potential leveling off in the market.
