Say hello to R10-D10 – a groundbreaking AI-powered helper robot, taking center stage at the AI forum "AI-supported Production" during this year's BAI.CON at Ingolstadt! Developed by the Technical University of Ingolstadt (THI), this learning robot is set to revolutionize manufacturing processes through efficiency and sustainable practices.

With its humble buzzing around the production hall, R10-D10 effortlessly scoops up components, navigates around obstacles, and delivers goods – all while leaving quite an impression. But make no mistake - it's not here to impress. It's a hardworking machine designed to automate routine tasks without the need for complex technologies, challenging systems, or pricey repairs.

"No fancy shows, just real-life solutions," declares Alexander Schiendorfer, the research-professor for AI-based optimization in the automotive industry at THI. "R10-D10 is driven by a noble purpose: to become easily self-programmed by workers and adapt to their experiences." He further adds, "Ideally, it will be like an assistant robot that steps in to help where manpower is lacking." On top of that, it could perform additional tasks, such as fetching tools or materials, thereby streamlining production and paving the way for flexible, intelligent manufacturing processes.

Proximity Perks:

One significant advantage of R10-D10 lies in its components, which are widely used across the region's supplier industry. The close connection with nearby automotive companies in Ingolstadt could potentially accelerate development and real-world application of this cutting-edge technology.

Training for R10-D10 takes place in THI's laboratory for production technology, with the support of Jürgen Bock, the professor for AI applications in innovative production and logistics systems. During virtual training sessions, R10-D10 practices movement sequences, grasping techniques, and navigation, all powered by advanced simulation and AI computers. This approach saves resources and reduces the barriers to deploying R10-D10, even in smaller companies.

Key contributions to the project come from the scientific junior staff, notably Pauline Steffel, PhD candidate at the THI's doctoral center for AI/Computer Science. Her research focuses on the intricacies of robot-based production processes, helping robots understand computer-based manufacturing facilities and processes, and thereby enabling autonomous task planning. R10-D10 serves as the perfect embodiment of a new generation of smart, practical assistant systems – down-to-earth, incredibly handy, and always ready to pitch in and help!
