Apple Prepares Major Siri Upgrade for Voice Control of iPhone Apps

Apple is set to release a significant upgrade to Siri, its virtual assistant, around spring 2026. The update will enable voice control of iPhone apps through an enhanced App Intents framework, allowing users to perform complex, voice-activated tasks.

The upgraded Siri won't necessarily make Siri "smarter" in AI reasoning but will provide a voice-first controller interface for apps, enhancing usability and accessibility, especially hands-free interaction. The App Intents framework allows developers to expose app functions to Siri, enabling voice commands to control app-specific features without manual input.

Due to security and privacy concerns, Apple may exclude sensitive categories such as banking, health, and finance apps from full voice control access. This Siri improvement is crucial for Apple's broader hardware ecosystem plans, including an expected smart display and a tabletop robot scheduled around 2026; delays in Siri’s upgrades have postponed some of these launches.

Apple is currently testing this feature with popular apps like Uber, Amazon, YouTube, Facebook, WhatsApp, Threads, and a few games. The company is working on refining the feature by testing AI output accuracy and app compatibility through its data operations teams.

The voice-first Siri controller for iPhone apps is also expected to power Apple's rumored home devices, such as a smart display and a tabletop home robot. If successful, this upgrade could offer a voice-powered experience across Apple's ecosystem.

Apple plans to roll out the feature gradually to address accuracy concerns. While the exact release date is yet to be confirmed, it is expected to align with iOS 26.4.

In the meantime, it's worth noting that the price of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 has dropped by over Rs 39,000 on Amazon, and the Oppo Find X8 Pro has dropped by over Rs 17,700. (Advertisements)
