Fermion's "Conflicted": A Dark Electronic Masterpiece
New York-based electronic duo Fermion has released their latest album, "Conflicted", a synthwave/darkwave/industrial/EBM hybrid work that delves into contrasts between emotional states and sonic textures. The album, released on July 25, 2025, via Re:Mission Entertainment, is available as a limited edition CD and across all digital platforms.
The current lineup of Fermion remains Eric Shans and Augustine Backer, who have a shared interest in darker electronic styles, combining retro synth influences with industrial sound design. The album was written by the duo and mixed, produced, and mastered by Justin Singer at 10×13 Studio in Media, Pennsylvania.
The album's thematic focus reflects a tension or "conflict" within the music and lyrics, building on the band’s previous thematic explorations from earlier releases like 2020’s “We Are Nowhere” and “Elegaic”. A fusion of synthwave, darkwave, industrial, and EBM, "Conflicted" showcases Fermion’s trademark sound of combining synth melodies with industrial beats and darkwave moodiness.
Tracks like “Unity With Chaos” and “Impetus” showcase this unique style, with their driving rhythms and dark, atmospheric synth textures. The production and mixing by Justin Singer contribute to a polished, immersive sound.
While no direct comparisons to specific bands are given, Fermion's approach aligns them well within the contemporary dark electronic scene, appealing to fans of these subgenres. Their music may be compared to acts that blend dark electronic music with industrial and synthwave elements, such as Front Line Assembly, VNV Nation, or She Past Away.
