Exploring LG's Smart Cottage: A Glimpse into Potential Smart Home Technologies of Tomorrow

In a recent visit to South Korea, the Homes Editor was given a tour of LG's Smart Cottage, a compact, yet luxurious, single-story home that showcases the latest in smart home technology and sustainable living. Although the Smart Cottage is currently available for purchase as a B2B offering in South Korea, LG is considering expanding its market to the United States and Europe.

The Smart Cottage, measuring 10 meters wide, 3.3 meters deep, and 4 meters tall, is designed to make the most of every inch of space. It is available in four configurations, ranging from 26.6 to 45.4 square meters, with prices between $134,000 and $293,000 USD. The cottage is equipped with over 70% prefabricated components, integrated LG smart appliances, IoT devices, solar panels, and energy storage, achieving Korea's highest zero-energy building certification (ZEB Plus).

One of the standout features of the Smart Cottage is the luxurious LG StandbyME television and a couch that can convert into a bed. The ThinQ InstaView refrigerator allows users to knock on the door to see what's inside and change the color of the lights to match the mood of their music or decor. The ThinQ app can control LG's WashTower Compact and the ThinQ InstaView refrigerator, as well as the smart home devices in the Smart Cottage.

The Smart Cottage also boasts a conveniently-placed air purifier near the bed and a space-efficient kitchen that is generous without intruding too much on the living space. The bathroom in the Smart Cottage is significantly nicer and larger than the one in the writer's apartment in London.

The Smart Cottage uses IoT devices such as smart locks, smart lights, CCTV, and motorized blinds to manage the home both remotely and on-site using the ThinQ app. This technology makes it easy for homeowners to control their living space from anywhere, offering a level of convenience that is hard to resist.

Although the Smart Cottage is not yet available in the US or European markets, LG is considering expanding its market to these regions. As of July 2025, the Smart Cottage remains a unique offering in South Korea, providing a glimpse into the future of sustainable and smart living.
