Expanded Plans for Alipay's Global Dominance by Ant Group
Alipay+ Expands Globally, Connecting Merchants to Multiple Payment Methods
Ant Group's cross-border payments solution, Alipay+, is set to expand its reach beyond Asia, aiming to connect international merchants to over 60 regional payment methods [3]. This move will enable seamless checkout flows and real-time currency settlement in RMB, USD, EUR, HKD, and support multiple wallets such as Alipay, AlipayHK, KakaoPay, GCash, and Touch 'n Go [3].
The expansion of Alipay+ is not limited to Asia. Ant Group has already established partnerships across Europe, linking to digital wallets and payment services in Finland (ePassi), Norway (Vipps), Spain (MOMO), Portugal (Pagaqui), and Austria (Bluecode) [1]. This has significantly increased Alipay’s merchant acceptance in these regions.
In the UK, Ant Group has expanded the Alipay app acceptance through acquisitions like the UK's WorldFirst and partnerships such as with Barclaycard [1].
Ant Group regards cardless payments as a key part of the cashless future and is integrating innovative payment technologies, such as hands-free AR glasses payments powered by Alipay+, aiming to bring these to global markets, thereby enhancing the consumer payment experience worldwide [4][5].
Over 1 billion people globally use a digital wallet connected to Alipay, making Ant Group one of the best-known digital wallets in the world [2]. An interview with Ant Group's Jia Hang, discussing the expansion plans for Alipay+, was conducted by Daniel Webber and published on LinkedIn [6].
In Asia, Alipay+ is already linked to various local wallets and digital payment methods:
- China (Alipay)
- Hong Kong (AlipayHK)
- South Korea (KakaoPay)
- Philippines (GCash)
- Malaysia (Touch 'n Go)
As Ant Group continues to expand Alipay+ beyond Asia, it is poised to become a comprehensive cross-border payment gateway, with ongoing plans to scale globally, including North America and other key markets [1][3][4].
The Alipay+ expansion is not just confined to Asia, it extends to Europe as well, linking financial services in the UK, Finland, Norway, Spain, Portugal, and Austria. Ant Group also plans to integrate technology-driven payment solutions, such as hands-free AR glasses payments, in key global markets to enhance the worldwide payment experience.
