Enhancing Automotive Excellence Requires a Manufacturer's Perspective
Toyota Unveils New Crown Sport: A Sporty and Comfortable Ride
Toyota has released its latest offering, the new Crown Sport, a sporty and comfortable SUV that promises an exciting driving experience. The key to this new model's development lies in a comprehensive review and rethinking of the entire manufacturing process on the production floor, a shift that aligns with Toyota’s philosophy of continuous improvement (kaizen) and the concept that “roads build people and cars.”
At the heart of the development team was Yuji Honma, who led the creation of the Crown Sport. Honma aimed to excite customers with a vehicle that would not compromise on ride quality and comfort. He was joined by Ryuhei Ito and Aoi Yamazaki, who joined Toyota in 2015 and 2017 respectively, and were part of the development team for the Crown Sport.
Ikuo Tachi, the group leader, organized the team with two junior staff as main members. Tachi felt that the sensibilities of the younger generation would be valuable in developing the Crown Sport. Masao Tsukada, a Toyota veteran, partnered with Matsumiya as a test driver, lending his experience to the development process.
The team continued to discuss progress with Akihiro Sarada, the chief engineer overseeing the entire Crown series. Shinichiro Matsumiya was involved in developing the Sport's suspension, steering, and rear-wheel steering system. Matsumiya and his colleagues sought to express the "sport" aspect while retaining the comfort that is a core part of the Crown's DNA.
The preliminary development vehicle received feedback suggesting it lacked the quality feel of a Crown. Ito and Yamazaki worked diligently to address this issue, and their efforts paid off. The new Crown Sport offers a lineup of four body variations, each designed to deliver a sporty and comfortable driving experience.
The team's view of sportiness coalesced into the keywords "instinctive" and "fun." The Crown Sport is a new form of sport SUV, offering a unique blend of performance and comfort that sets it apart from its competitors.
This integrative genba review process is understood to have contributed significantly to the refined sporty and comfortable driving experience the new model offers. Although exact specific technical changes for the Crown Sport were not fully detailed, this approach to development—emphasizing community development, process review, and ergonomic improvements on the production floor—is highlighted as a core driver behind Toyota’s recent vehicle development successes.
The new Crown Sport, developed under the leadership of Yuji Honma and a diverse team including Ryuhei Ito and Aoi Yamazaki, combines the worlds of technology and automotive industry to create a sporty and comfortable ride. In the heart of Toyota's finance sector, Akihiro Sarada, the chief engineer overseeing the Crown series, provided crucial guidance to ensure the vehicle's success in the competitive transportation market.
