Enhanced Border Control: Police Union Urges for Advanced Technology

Border Control Authorities Urged to Enhance Technical Resources by Police Union - Enhanced Border Technology Demanded by Police Union for Strengthened Security Measures

With the current migration situation, border control measures in Germany are under scrutiny. The police union is calling out for better technical resources to streamline operations and relieve overworked officers. Here's a rundown of their recommendations:

  1. Drones: These flying devices can provide an aerial view of the border, aiding in monitoring larger and unguarded areas.
  2. Mobile checkpoints with modern license plate recognition systems: Equipped with advanced technology, these checkpoints can swiftly identify vehicles and their drivers, speeding up the border check process.
  3. People detection devices: Devices that can identify people within vehicles from afar are essential for quick identification and streamlined control.
  4. High-tech surveillance of "green borders": This would involve deploying sophisticated surveillance systems along uncontrolled and natural borders to monitor activity and maintain security.

The police union additionally underscored the burden on the Reserve Police and mobile units. They are already working excess hours and, if the situation continues, it could lead to gaps in deployment at key locations such as train stations and airports.

Modern technical measures could help lighten the load on officers, especially when monitoring borders away from controlled crossings. The Federal Police has experimented with such technology since 2018 but hasn't yet invested in it. Other European countries, such as the Netherlands and Romania, are reportedly ahead of Germany in this regard.

The union welcomes measures that aid in controlling migration but emphasizes the unsustainable workload of the Federal Police. The question remains: How long can they maintain such high levels of performance at the borders? Furthermore, the union anticipates traffic disruptions for vacationers due to increased border checks resulting in longer wait times and traffic jams.

Alexander Dobrindt, the new Federal Minister of the Interior, announced tighter border controls recently to limit refugee numbers. These measures involve deploying additional federal police officers at the borders and rejecting asylum seekers. Be prepared for changes in border traffic, as both large and small border crossings will be more thoroughly inspected.

In light of the growing demand for enhanced border control, the police union advocates for the implementation of advanced technology such as drones, mobile checkpoints, people detection devices, and high-tech surveillance systems along green borders. This is to alleviate the strain on the Reserve Police and mobile units, who are currently working beyond their capacity, and to maintain effective border control away from controlled crossings.
