ENGIE Launches Belgium's First Large-Scale Battery Project in Vilvoorde
ENGIE has launched Belgium's first large-scale battery project in Vilvoorde, connecting 400 MWh to the grid. This €230-290 million investment is a significant step towards green energy and marks a shift from pilot projects to substantial deployment.
The Vilvoorde battery park will supply clean power to nearly 96,000 households. It's divided into two 100 MW phases, with the first already operational and the second expected by late 2025. This project ensures Belgium's energy security and supports its renewable grid, thanks to a 15-year contract with Elia.
ENGIE's former gas power plant in Vilvoorde will serve as a backup unit for three years, ensuring a smooth transition. The company plans similar projects in Kallo and Drogenbos, starting in 2024. Sungrow's PowerTitan liquid-cooled technology powers the Vilvoorde project, Europe's largest battery project to date, featuring 320 units.
The Vilvoorde battery project, a €230-290 million investment, is a major milestone for Belgium's energy storage sector. It provides clean power to 96,000 households and supports the country's renewable grid. ENGIE's plans for similar projects in Kallo and Drogenbos indicate a promising future for energy storage in Belgium.
