Elon Musk Returns to Full-Time Work Schedule, Focuses on Engineering and Execution

Elon Musk, the tech mogul behind Tesla, SpaceX, and X (formerly Twitter), has resumed a demanding work schedule, working seven days a week and sleeping in company offices. This renewed commitment is a response to recent operational challenges, including an outage at X, and is aimed at driving improvements across all his companies.

The X outage, which affected tens of thousands of users globally, was triggered by a fire at a data center in Oregon. The incident has played a significant role in Musk's decision to return to a full-time work schedule.

Musk's focus on engineering and execution is expected to bring about improvements in the operational stability of Tesla and his other companies. At Tesla, Musk has enforced strict in-office work mandates, rejecting remote work exceptions without his personal approval, underscoring his emphasis on direct engineering oversight and rapid decision-making.

Musk's "wartime mode" is a reflection of his past crisis-driven work habits, such as during the Model 3 production ramp-up, when he worked up to 120 hours per week and even slept on the factory floor. Musk describes this pace as painful and harmful to his brain and heart but sees it as necessary for decisive leadership during critical periods.

Musk has also announced a formal retreat from political engagement. He will contribute to the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), his volunteer role, one or two days every two weeks going forward. Under Musk's leadership, the DOGE initiative claims to have identified $160 billion in federal savings.

The impact of Musk's renewed commitment on the operational stability and investor satisfaction of Tesla and his other companies is yet to be seen. However, Musk's return to the helm of his companies is a clear indication of his dedication to hands-on problem solving and accelerating execution after setbacks like the X outage.

Technology continues to be a focal point for Elon Musk as he immerses himself in the engineering and execution processes of his companies, including Tesla and SpaceX, in response to recent operational issues. At the same time, Musk has scaled back his political involvement, dedicating only a few days every two weeks to his role within the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), reflecting a shift in priorities towards general-news matters within his various ventures.
